The Zambia U20 Women National Team delivered a resounding 6-0 win over Botswana at the UJ stadium in Johannesburg to maintain their perfect record at the ongoing COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship 2024.
The Young Copper Queens took their lead as early as the first minute when Jacqueline Mbewe pounced on a lurking ball inside the opposition box after a failed clearance.
Player of the Match Saliya Mwanza took matters into her own hands when she dribbled the midfielders to fire home Zambia’s second on 35 minutes.
Six minutes later, captain Mary Mbewe poked home the third goal after being setup beautifully by substitute Gift Chilwizhi on the right to give Zambia a 3-0 lead at the break.
Zambia would wait until the 65th minute when substitute Ruth Muwowo’s shot was turned in by Botswana defender Ivy Mankgatau before another substitute Edith Phiri scored a rocked of a goal 12 minutes from time.
Muwowo was on the scoresheet for the fourth time at the tournament when her effort went past Karabo Luka in what was Zambia’s 18th goal of the campaign without conceding any.
With three wins in as many matches, the Young Copper Queens are firmly in the driver’s seat as they head into their final game against Mozambique on Saturday.
The tournament has five countries and is being played on a round-robin basis with the format awarding three points for a win and one for a draw, and the team that accumulates more points is awarded the title.
