The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has officially announced key changes to the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup player registration rules, aligning them with European standards. The amendments will now allow footballers who have already played for one club in either tournament to be registered by another club in the same competition during the same season.
This decision mirrors the player registration regulations in UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League, a move aimed at increasing competition, flexibility, and squad depth for clubs competing in Africa’s elite tournaments.
Additionally, the CAF Executive Committee (CAF EXCO) has extended the player registration deadline to 28 February 2025, giving clubs more time to strengthen their squads for the latter stages of the competitions.
CAF believes these changes will enhance the competitiveness of African club football, attract more fans, sponsors, and broadcasters to the tournaments, improve the quality of African clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, set to take place in the United States between June and July 2025.
With this move, CAF aims to modernize its club competitions and make African football more appealing on a global scale. Fans can now expect more dynamic player transfers and exciting squad rotations in the upcoming CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup matches.
