Nuri Şahin’s tenure as Borussia Dortmund manager has come to an early end. Appointed just last June, the former midfielder was dismissed last week following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.
In his place, Dortmund has turned to Niko Kovac, who is set to take charge of the squad in the coming days. While U19 coach Mike Tullberg managed the recent match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Kovac’s arrival marks a fresh start for the struggling Bundesliga side.
Lars Ricken, the club’s sporting director, confirmed the news on DAZN, stating, “We have reached an agreement in principle. He (Kovac) will take charge of the team on Sunday.” The former AS Monaco and Bayern Munich coach faces a tough challenge, with Dortmund currently sitting 11th in the Bundesliga and needing to navigate the play-offs to reach the Champions League Round of 16.
