After Vitor Bruno was fired due to poor performance in the Europa League and a loss in the League Cup semi-finals, Porto announced on Monday that they have hired Martin Anselmi as their new coach for a two-and-a-half-year term.
The Primeira Liga team is six points behind champions Sporting and now sits in third place in the domestic league.
With just two victories in seven games, Porto is currently in 25th place in the Europa League, one spot behind the cutoff for advancement to the next round.
In 2022, Anselmi, 39, guided Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle to a Copa Sudamericana championship.
Last year, he and Cruz Azul advanced to the Mexican Liga MX final. This is the Argentine’s first European assignment at Porto.
“We have a lot of hope in you… we’re sure you are the leader we needed,” Porto president Andre Villas-Boas said at Anselmi’s presentation.
Porto play their final league phase game of the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday.
