André Onana, the 28-year-old goalkeeper for Manchester United, has been awarded the prestigious FIFPRO Player Impact Award, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to underprivileged communities through the André Onana Foundation.
Founded with a mission to offer free medical care and life-altering surgeries to individuals in Cameroon and other Sub-Saharan African countries, Onana’s foundation has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of families. Over the past three years, the foundation’s collaboration with a dedicated team of surgeons and medical professionals has resulted in more than 1,200 surgical procedures, many of which have transformed the lives of children.
“When I passed through Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Milan on my way to Manchester United, I encountered people who helped me along the way,” Onana reflected during his acceptance speech. “When I was down, they gave me a hand so that I could stand up. I’ve never forgotten the help I received. Because of those who supported me in the past, I feel a responsibility to give back and help others.”
Initially focused on aiding blind children in Cameroon, the foundation has expanded its mission significantly. In July 2024, the André Onana Foundation conducted its fourth surgical campaign in Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital, with a team of Spanish health professionals, including nurses and pediatric surgeons, providing care to over 350 individuals.
“I want to thank FIFPRO and the Cameroonian players’ union Synafoc; this big donation is very welcome, and our team already has plans in place to do something special for the kids, hopefully in collaboration with UNICEF,” said Onana.
Looking ahead, Onana revealed that the foundation is exploring a partnership with the United Nations to broaden its reach and impact. “Our main priority going forward is to impact as many people as we can in the world,” he added.
Onana’s journey from a young goalkeeper in Cameroon to an international star is not just a tale of sporting success but also one of compassion and responsibility. His work stands as a testament to the profound difference athletes can make when they choose to leverage their influence for the greater good.
