In the first Premier League game under new manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, Manchester United crushed Everton 4-0 on Sunday, with two goals each from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee.
After 13 games, United moved up three spots to ninth place in the league with their largest margin of victory in a league match since a 5-1 victory over Leeds United in 2021.
Rashford’s side-footed volley, which went in off the outstretched foot of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, put United ahead in the 34th minute as he sprinted in to slam home Bruno Fernandes’s corner.
Amorim’s team was energised by the goal and dominated the remainder of the game.
In the 41st minute, Zirkzee increased the advantage after Jordan Pickford’s goal kick was intercepted by Amad Diallo, and the Dutch forward scored from close range after Fernandes’ cross.
Twenty seconds after halftime, Rashford, who has scored three goals in three games since Amorim took over, finished his brace after sprinting onto a through pass from Amad, who had been causing Everton issues all afternoon.
In the 64th minute, the Ivory Coast forward raced forward after stealing the ball from James Tarkowski, then fed Zirkzee to score his second goal.
All day, Amorim’s name was sung by delighted United supporters.
Since taking over, the Portuguese, who seldom smiled during the game, has won three straight games, including a 3-2 Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt and a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town.
Since Erik ten Hag was fired as manager on October 28, United has won all seven of their games in all competitions.
In 15th place, struggling Everton is two points above the relegation zone after failing to score in four games.
