Vipers SC picked a hard-fought 1-0 Uganda Premier League victory over UPDF FC, to extend their lead at the top of the table to 31 points, on Friday, at the Bombo Military Grounds.
Allan Okello’s solitary first-half strike was enough to sink the resilient army side under a heavy downpour in Bombo. The goal took the playmaker’s tally to 11 for the campaign, as he leads the chase for the golden boot.
Meanwhile, at the summit with 31 points, the Venoms are four clear off runners-up NEC FC, who will take on Mbarara City FC on Saturday.
On the evening under the tough rainy weather conditions, the game started slow in terms of goal-scoring opportunities, but with Vipers dominating possession.
With 15 minutes played, Okello broke the deadlock, striking off a rebound in the box, after UPDF failed to clear their lines.
The hosts nearly grabbed a leveller seven minutes later, but goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza brilliantly saved a free-kick from Fredrick Mugisha.
Three minutes after the half-hour mark, skipper Milton Karisa headed off the woodwork, having met a superb freekick from Moses Waiswa.
In the 76th minute left-back Derrick Ndahiro was shown a straight red card after a high boot foul on UPDF’s Samuel Kayongo Ssekamatte.
