After agreeing to a contract with Akwa United on Monday, veteran Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) coach Kennedy Boboye has returned to the team for the remainder of the season.
The Uyo-based team posted a statement on their X Twitter announcing the agreement.
“We have agreed a mid-season managerial contract with coach Kennedy Boboye,” the statement said.
“Boboye who won the NPFL title with us in 2021 signed the deal today and he is expected to begin work with the team later this week.”
Boboye, who oversaw Akwa United’s 2021 league trophy win, will have the formidable challenge of retaining the Akwa Ibon State-owned team in the Nigerian top division.
After 19 games in the 20-team standings, Akwa United is now ranked 19th, and the squad needs to turn things around to stay in the top division.
Before the second stanza of the 2024–2025 league season begins, the team is the second NPFL team to change coaches. Stanley Eguma, a seasoned tactician and one of the most well-respected individuals in Nigerian football, was named the new head coach of nine-time champions Enyimba International FC in December.
This came after Yemi Daniel Olanrewaju, their previous head coach, left. Eguma has a plethora of expertise and a successful track record, having previously been a member of Enyimba’s coaching team during their CAF Champions League victories in the early 2000s.
