In the heart of serene and secure Ekiti State, Nigeria, lies unassailable evidence of the power of vision, dedication, and selflessness. Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), founded by the great legal icon, Chief Afe Babalola SAN, stands as a symbol of renewed hope and excellence in the world of education.
This write-up explores my recent two-day visit to this extraordinary institution, celebrating its founder’s selflessness, the university’s idyllic setting, world-class facilities, and its commitment to nurturing a cultured generation. It also draws vital life lessons for profligate billionaires and insanely corrupt government officials tasked with educational development in our nation.
Chief Afe Babalola’s voyage to establishing ABUAD is nothing short of inspirational. What makes his story indeed more astonishing is that he embarked on this odyssey at an age when many people have long retired to unproductive sybaritic lives. His selflessness stands out as he invested his wealth, time, and energy into creating a world-class institution devoted to education and societal transformation.
Chief Babalola’s dedication to the betterment of his community and the nation at large is apparent in the university’s establishment. His decision to channel his resources towards building a university demonstrates a deep commitment to the future of Nigeria. It serves as a reminder that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams, especially when those dreams have the potential to impact countless lives for the better.
Nestled in the tranquil and growing town of Ado-Ekiti, Afe Babalola University enjoys an ideal location that fosters a conducive atmosphere for studying. The lush green surroundings, clean air, and peaceful ambiance create an environment where students can focus on their studies and personal growth. The sprawling campus exudes an air of tranquility and encourages intellectual exploration.
During my visit, I was struck by the attention to detail in the planning and design of the university grounds. It’s evident that every aspect of the campus has been carefully thought out to provide an excellent learning experience. From the well-manicured gardens to the modern classrooms, ABUAD offers students an oasis of knowledge and inspiration.
The commitment to excellence at ABUAD extends to its state-of-the-art facilities. The university boasts world-class infrastructure that rivals some of the best institutions globally. The well-equipped laboratories, libraries, and lecture halls provide students with access to up-to-the-minute technology and resources necessary for their academic pursuits. One of the stunning features of the university is its medical, sports, and recreational facilities. The ultra-modern teaching hospital, equipped with sophisticated medical technology, serves not only as a training ground for future healthcare professionals but also as a lifeline for the indigenous community. Furthermore, the sports and recreational facilities offer students a well-rounded education, emphasizing the significance of physical fitness and a balanced lifestyle.
ABUAD has carved a niche for itself by being a 100 percent residential institution. This unique approach to education ensures that students are fully immersed in the learning experience. With on-campus accommodation, they have the opportunity to engage in academic and extracurricular activities without the distractions of daily commuting. The fully residential feature of the university fosters a sense of community and belonging among students and encourages collaboration, cultural exchange, and personal development. This holistic approach to education aligns with Chief Babalola’s vision of producing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically excellent but also culturally alive and socially responsible.
One of the most noticeable aspects of ABUAD is its unwavering commitment to raising a cultured generation. Chief Afe Babalola understands the vital part education plays in shaping not only minds but also character. For that reason, the university places a strong emphasis on ethics, values, and cultural awareness. During my visit, as I walked around the campus from the 200-bed hotel accommodation, I witnessed firsthand the impact of ABUAD’s reorientation as the well-groomed students greeted and curtsied or bowed as they passed by. ABUAD is producing graduates who not only exceed academically but also carry with them a deep appreciation for their culture and a sense of responsibility towards society.
The highlight of my short stay in ABUAD, from a spiritual perspective, was the mind-blowing and humbling experience at the university planetarium which Chief encouraged me to visit in the evening of the second day. For those who do not know what a planetarium is, just as I did not know what it was before my eye-opening experience, a planetarium is a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky, or for training in celestial navigation. A dominant feature of most planetariums is the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars, planets, and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate their motion. During the show, I gained a more intense sense of awe and humility in the face of celestial wonders. All humans, especially the snooty and proud, should be encouraged to visit a planetarium so they can experience the immense cosmic expanse and realise their insignificance in gross matter.
Needless to say, ABUAD and its distinguished founder offer valuable lessons for profligate modern-day billionaires and corrupt government officials with insatiable acquisitive instincts. The founder’s selflessness in establishing this institution demonstrates that wealth can be a force for positive change when used wisely and for the benefit of society. It challenges those with immense resources to consider the impact they can make on education and the future of our nation. Additionally, the university’s success stands as a stark distinction to the inefficiency and mismanagement constantly associated with government institutions. It underscores the significance of visionary leadership and a commitment to excellence in all sectors. Government officials and others tasked or concerned with educational development should take note of the dedication and scrupulous planning that have made Afe Babalola University a shining illustration of what can be achieved in education.
To conclude, Afe Babalola University is not merely an institution of higher learning; it is a tribute to the power of selflessness, dedication, and visionary leadership. Chief Afe Babalola’s decision to establish this world-class university at an advanced age serves as an inspiration to us all. The university’s idyllic setting, top-notch facilities, and commitment to cultural preservation make it a true gem in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
