A senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Jibrin Okutepa, has advised the Supreme Court to revisit some of its decisions that were rooted in technicalities in electoral jurisprudence.

Okutepa gave the advise in Abuja, at the first Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) roundtable with the theme: “The Role of the Judiciary in Nigeria’s Democratic Sustainability”.

He explained that such technicalities should be revisited, particularly on subpoenaed witnesses in election petition cases, as, according to him, it is also necessary for all Nigerian courts and Tribunals dealing with electoral disputes to avoid technicality, analogue jurisprudence to digital jurisprudence where the use of technological devices to resolve electoral disputes is encouraged.

IPAC National Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, said that the council thought it necessary to convene the roundtable among relevant stakeholders to explore the judiciary’s role in consolidating democracy in Nigeria, according to calls for urgent judicial reform to save the judiciary and restore its integrity and honour as the temple of justice and the last hope of all aggrieved people.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, while urging political leaders to collaboratively strengthen the judiciary, uphold the rule of law, and protect the principles of democracy, noted that the judiciary faced various challenges such as inadequate funding, delays in justice delivery, judicial independence, amongst others.

The roundtable aims to identify challenges and propose solutions to enhance the effectiveness of the judiciary.
