President Donald Trump has confirmed that six Americans who were being held hostage in Venezuela have been freed.
This comes after Trump’s envoy for special missions Richard Grenell‘s visit to the South American country.
In a tweet via his X account on Friday night, Trump said: “Just been informed that we are bringing six hostages home from Venezuela. Thank you to Ric Grenell and my entire staff. Great job!”
Grenell had reportedly met with Venezuela president Nicolás Maduro to warn him about the consequences of detaining the Americans.
He shared a photo of the smiling Americans returning home after being released on Friday.
“We are wheels up and headed home with these 6 American citizens. They just spoke to @realDonaldTrump and they couldn’t stop thanking him,” Grenell wrote.
There were at least nine people with United States citizenship or residency detained in Venezuela, according to Venezuelan officials.
The government had accused some of them of plotting to kill Maduro.
