The Benue State government has confirmed the suspected outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of three people and 12 reported cases from the viral disease in the the State.
This was disclosed in a telephone conversation with journalists, on Wednesday, by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Yanmar Ortese.
He said the reported deaths and cases were still based on suspicions.
Dr Ortese said the incident occurred last week in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state.
“We have suspected cases of Lassa fever. Three people died with symptoms that depict Lassa fever. 12 samples from people who had close contact with them have been taken and until the result is out, it remains under suspicion. No confirmed cases yet.”
He added that the ministry has swung into action as it’s emergency operations unit has quarantined those suspected to be affected.
