Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, addressed the media regarding the status of Victor Boniface, the team’s prolific striker, following his injury setback. With the Bundesliga resuming its intensity after the winter break, Boniface’s absence has left fans and the team anxious.
“The question [of what Victor Boniface’s setback was] is better answered by the doctor,” Alonso began, carefully steering the discussion toward the medical staff’s expertise. “I can say that he needs a little bit more time. We need to be patient with Boni to get him back to top form and make him feel better than before the injury.”
Boniface, who had been one of the standout performers for Leverkusen earlier in the season, was initially expected to return shortly after the winter break. However, the recovery process has taken longer than anticipated, forcing the club to rethink its plans.
“It’s unfortunate since our plan was for him to return after the winter break, but that can happen,” Alonso admitted. “Now it’s time to support Boni and give him more time.”
When pressed about specific matches, Alonso remained cautious. “I don’t know [whether he’ll be available against Gladbach on January 18],” he said, adding, “We don’t expect him to [play against Mainz next week] under normal circumstances.”
The coach emphasized the importance of patience and prioritizing the player’s long-term well-being over rushing his recovery. Boniface’s absence will be felt on the pitch, but Alonso’s measured approach reflects the club’s commitment to ensuring the player returns in optimal condition. As Leverkusen navigate the crucial stages of the season, the focus remains on collective strength and resilience, with hopes that Boniface will soon be back to lead the charge.
