Ismaila Sarr, a winger for Crystal Palace, scored two goals as his team defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, sending the Seagulls to their first Premier League home loss of the year.
After going undefeated in their last five league games, Palace moves up to 15th place in the standings with 16 points from those games.
They lie four points ahead of 18th-place Ipswich Town, who are in danger of relegation. With 24 points, Brighton drops to ninth position, four points behind Nottingham Forest, who are in fourth place.
After Joao Pedro’s incredible overhead flip, Kaoru Mitoma came close to opening the score just three minutes, but Palace custodian Dean Henderson made a fantastic save to keep the Japanese winger out of the game. Both teams had a fast start.
The visitors took the lead when, in the 27th minute, centre back Trevoh Chalobah scored from close range after midfielder Will Hughes’ excellent corner caused some confusion in the Brighton box.
Glasner and his team held their breath through a VAR check for handball before the goal was confirmed.
Glasner made no changes to the team that drew 2-2 with defending champions Manchester City at Selhurst Park last Saturday.
After making two saves to keep out Sarr and Daniel Munoz, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was defeated as the home team fell behind two goals six minutes later when Sarr finally met a deep cross from left back Tyrick Mitchell with a brilliant header.
In the first half, Brighton, without Danny Welbeck, their top league scorer this season, produced very little against a self-assured Palace.
After the break, Brighton launched a barrage of assaults, but Henderson made a series of saves, first a Lewis Dunk header and then a Julio Enciso shot.
Palace’s right wing-back The Colombian celebrated what he believed to be his team’s third goal in the 67th minute when Munoz had the ball in the net, but VAR saved Brighton by chalking it off for a foul by Sarr on Pervis Estupinan.
