Pep Guardiola’s struggling Manchester City team was further tormented by Ruben Amorim as Amad Diallo led Manchester United to a 2-1 comeback derby victory at the end.
In his farewell game as Sporting Lisbon manager last month, the Portuguese led the Red Devils across town for the first time, and all eyes were on the Etihad Stadium.
Since then, the situation has become worse and worse. On Sunday, Diallo saved the day as Amorim handed City their eighth loss in 11 games, continuing Guardiola’s worst managerial run.
The visitors persevered to win, just as they did at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, but Josko Gvardiol’s header had placed the champions on track for a much-needed victory as United’s corner problems were once again revealed.
Two minutes from time, Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot when Matheus Nunes, who had been playing as a replacement left-back, gifted the ball and then awkwardly took down Diallo in the box.
More drama was to come when the Ivory Coast international sprinted onto a cross from Lisandro Martinez, hoisted the ball over Ederson, and then scored the game-winning goal from a close angle in the ninetieth minute.
