Nani, a former winger for Manchester United and Portugal, has hung up his boots.
This season, Nani, 38, has become a member of the Portuguese first division’s hometown team, Estrela Amadora.
On November 1, he played his last game at Sporting, his first club.
“The time has come to say goodbye, I have decided to finish my career as a professional player,” he wrote on social media.
“It’s been an amazing ride and I wanted to thank every single person who has helped me and supported me through the highs and lows during a career which lasted over 20 years and gave me so many unforgettable memories.
“Time to turn a new leaf and focus on new goals and dreams.”
After spending almost £21 million to join United from Sporting in June 2007, Nani played 230 games and scored 41 goals for the team.
In addition to four Premier League championships and two League Cups over eight seasons, he won the Champions League in his debut season at United.
He was voted the club’s player of the year, included in the PFA’s Premier League team of the year, and led the league in assists with 14, making 2010–11 his most memorable season with United.
In 2014–15, he returned to Sporting on loan before permanently leaving United for Fenerbache the following season.
In addition, he played for Melbourne Victory, Adana Demirspor, Orlando City, Venezia, Valencia, Lazio, Sporting for a third time, and finally Estrela Amadora.
Nani won Euro 2016 and scored 24 goals in 112 appearances for his country.
