The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), has called on professionals to take the lead in driving governance reforms in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 40th Annual General Assembly of the APBN in Abuja, the President of the APBN, Manason Rubainu emphasised the need for improved governance and professionalism in Nigeria, citing the country’s governance crisis as a major obstacle to development.
He lamented that Nigeria is suffering from a governance crisis, marked by inefficiency, corruption and lack of accountability.
“As professionals, we have a unique role to play in the development of our country, but often we become complicit in governance failures.”
Rubainu identified insecurity, corruption and underdeveloped infrastructure as key challenges facing Nigeria, stressing that professionals must recommit to ethical standards and promote accountability and transparency.
“We must take ownership of the future of Nigeria and contribute positively to national development,” he urged.
“We cannot afford to stand by while our nation falters.”
Rubainu outlined a four-pronged approach to address governance issues: advocate for policy reforms, promote ethical practice, mentor the next generation and collaborate for development.
Rubainu also announced the confirmation of the Acting Executive Secretary as Executive Secretary and the establishment of an APBN Staff Salary Structure.
The APBN represents various professional bodies in Nigeria, aiming to promote excellence and ethics across professions. Its membership includes engineers, lawyers, accountants, doctors and educators.
Rubainu emphasized professionals’ critical role in shaping Nigeria’s future. “We are not mere spectators; we are architects of society,” he said. “Our knowledge and skills shape policies, infrastructure and systems.”
He challenged professionals to reflect on their daily practices, ensuring they uphold ethical standards and contribute to national development.
Rubainu called for collaboration between professionals, government institutions, civil society and the private sector to drive reforms. “Together, we can correct the course of governance in Nigeria,” he said.
The APBN pledged to strengthen its structure, enhance visibility and promote actionable solutions for national issues. Rubainu urged member bodies to pay dues, supporting the association’s efforts.
Rubainu concluded by emphasizing collective action. “Let us embody the change we seek,” he said. “Together, we can build a Nigeria that truly works for all.”
