The Federal University of Education, Kano, is grappling with a unionism power struggle, as the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) alleges a plot to form a parallel union.
COEASU Chairman, Ado Muhammad Abdullahi, addressed a press conference at the union’s secretariat, revealing a letter sent to the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Education, Kano, and other stakeholders.
According to Abdullahi, a splinter group within the institution seeks to disrupt peace and unity among staff by forming a rival academic staff union.
He described this move as an attempt by self-seeking saboteurs to undermine the transition process.
“We view this as an attempt to polarize the university and create undue animosity and chaos among us,” Abdullahi said.
The union leader emphasised that COEASU remains legitimate in other upgraded institutions, such as Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, and Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo.
COEASU has urged the management to intervene, citing potential threats to peace and smooth transition.
