COSAFA Women’s: Comoros and Zimbabwe keep hopes alive in Gqeberha

Comoros Islands gave themselves a wonderful chance at qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2024 HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women’s Championship when they recorded a historic 3-1 victory over Angola in Group C on Sunday.

Alicia Chanfi, Haloua Ahamada and Nasrati Ali were on target for the islanders, who now face off against Zambia on Tuesday for a place in the last-4.

Maria Ponda grabbed the consolation for Angola, who are now out of the running after losing both their matches in the three-team pool.

In Group D, which also has three teams, Zimbabwe couldn’t maximise on their chances against Lesotho in the first half but ended up 3-0 winners.

They could have taken the lead in the first half from the penalty spot after Christabell Katona was brought down in the box. Alice Moyo disappointedly hit the cross bar.

Ethel Chinyeree also had a shot to break the deadlock soon after. There was another golden opportunity for Sithethelelwe Sibanda’s charges to take the lead through Ennety Chemhere, who was one on one with the keeper.

However, Thuto Maifo came out to sweep the ball out of danger leaving the tie locked at 0-0 at the break. Zimbabwe intensified their efforts to get a goal in the second half and with the game looking like it was going to end goalless and send them home, but Ethel Chinyerere broke the dead lock at the hour mark.

Priviledge Mupeti scored eight minutes later but the goal was ruled offside and a minute after that Katona doubled the lead.

Zimbabwe must now wait for the result between Lesotho and Mozambique in the group decider to know if they will progress to the knockout phase.

Day seven opens with Group B deciders, both starting at 12:00 as Madagascar and Botswana play at Wolfson Stadium and Mauritius and Malawi at Madibaz Stadium.

This will be followed by Group A deciders at 15:00, Eswatini against Namibia at Wolfson and South Africa against Seychelles at Madibaz Stadium.
