GITEX Nigeria: Lagos ready to host global tech event, says Hamzat

by admin

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has affirmed the state’s readiness to host the GITEX Nigeria conference in September next year, positioning Lagos as a hub for global technological innovation.

Speaking at a meeting with Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of Kaoun International, and her team at the ongoing GITEX 2024 event in Dubai, Dr. Hamzat emphasized that both the Lagos State Government and Nigeria’s tech ecosystem are fully prepared to welcome this prestigious global tech show.

Hamzat highlighted the significance of hosting GITEX in Lagos, a city recognized for its vibrant tech landscape in Africa. He stated that the timing is ideal, as Nigeria is witnessing rapid growth in technology and innovation, making it a prime moment for international engagement.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has made technology a core focus in driving the state’s development. Initiatives like the ‘Art of Technology (AOT),’ now in its fifth year, have uncovered numerous young entrepreneurs in the IT and innovation sectors. Many of these innovators have transitioned their ideas into successful businesses, boosting the economy and strengthening the ecosystem,” Hamzat said.

He expressed excitement about showcasing Lagos’ tech talent to the world through GITEX Nigeria, noting that local innovators are already solving real-life problems.

“We have 10- and 12-year-old children coding to help their parents sell products and services, like young innovators assisting their parents in the fishing trade. This is the power of technology, and we are thrilled to host an event that will connect these talents with countless global opportunities.”

Hamzat also touched on Lagos’ growing creative industry, calling it “the next oil” and highlighting the state’s commitment to investing in entertainment as a major economic driver. “Technology and entertainment are closely linked, and we see tremendous potential in leveraging tech for our thriving creative sector,” he added.

Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of Kaoun International, expressed her optimism about hosting GITEX in Lagos, emphasizing that technology is essential for survival. Reflecting on her last visit to Nigeria, she shared how impressed she was by the young Nigerians working on innovative projects in modest settings.

“Our goal is to discover new partners and connect Nigeria to untapped opportunities in the tech space. We will need significant support from the Lagos State Government, particularly with logistics and security, to ensure a successful event,” LohMirmand said.

GITEX, the world’s largest technology expo, connects global industry leaders, governments, startups, investors, and corporate buyers. Held annually at the Dubai World Trade Center, it showcases technological advancements driving economic transformations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
