A serving officer, PC Tony Watts, has been formally charged with rape, following an investigation into an alleged off-duty incident that took place over four years ago.
Watts, who is attached to the North Area Command Unit, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 16 October 2024, where he will face the charges.
The Met Police said the case stems from an incident reported in May 2022, which is alleged to have occurred between mid-January and early February 2020.
According to the police, Watts was off duty at the time of the incident. The alleged victim, a woman known to the officer, reported the matter two years later, leading to his arrest in May 2022. After his arrest, Watts was released on bail while investigations continued.
The charge against Watts was officially brought on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, marking a significant development in the prolonged investigation.
The police have confirmed that the victim has been informed of the developments and is being supported throughout the legal process.
As is standard in cases involving serious criminal allegations against officers, PC Watts has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
The Metropolitan Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in such cases, with an internal misconduct investigation likely to follow the criminal case, depending on the outcome.
The force continues to face scrutiny over the conduct of its officers, with this latest case adding to growing concerns about the behaviour of serving officers.
