2025 AFCON: Ibrahim Adel scores late to help Egypt qualify after beating Mauritania

by admin

Egypt needed a late goal to beat Mauritania 1-0 and qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to be held in Morocco.

After a 0-0 result in the first half, the Pharoahs finally broke the deadlock in the 86th minute courtesy of Ibrahim Adel.

The win at Stade de la Capitale saw the Pharoahs qualify with a 100 percent record as they are unbeaten from four matches.

They topped the group with 12 points, while the closest challenger Botswana have six.

Meanwhile, Botswana sealed a double over Cape Verde after winning 1-0 in their matchday four fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Zebras went into the game having beaten Cape Verde 1-0 in their first meeting three days ago. Playing before a huge crowd at Francistown Stadium, the Zebras were forced to wait until the second half to score what turned out to be the winner.

It was Botswana striker Thabang Sesinyi, who plays for South African club Jwaneng Galaxy, who scored the all important goal in the 69th minute.

The win enabled Botswana to move second in the group with six points while Cape Verde remained last with three points.
