Why USA celebrates Columbus Day every second Monday in October

by admin

Columbus Day is observed annually on the second Monday of October in the United States (U.S.) to honor the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus.

The holiday commemorates Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on 12 October 1492. Though not the first European to reach the continent, Columbus is often associated with the discovery of America.

Cities and states across the U.S. mark the occasion with parades, educational events, and cultural celebrations that highlight Italian-Americans’ contributions to the country.

Apart from various countries in the Americas, other countries celebrating Columbus Day include Italy and Spain.

For many, Columbus Day symbolises discovery and the beginning of cultural exchange between Europe and the Americas. Italian-Americans, in particular, use the holiday to celebrate their heritage, with Columbus seen as a figure representing their role in shaping American society.

However, the holiday has become controversial in recent years. Critics argue that Columbus’ arrival led to violence, disease, and the displacement of Indigenous peoples. In response, several states and cities have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, aiming to recognise the experiences and resilience of Native Americans.

Though Nigeria has no direct connection to Columbus Day, it serves as a reminder of the broader legacy of European exploration and colonialism. Like many African nations, Nigeria experienced colonial rule, with the British establishing control over coastal areas in the mid-19th century. After decades of nationalist movements, Nigeria gained independence from British rule on 1 October 1960.
