Patients’ safety policy: Orthopaedic Hospital MD commends Health Minister

The Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital Benin (NOHB), Dr Philip Ugbodaga has congratulated the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on the launch of the first ever national policy and implementation strategy on patient safety and healthcare quality.

He commended the Honourable Minister, Prof. Ali Pate and the Honourable Minister of State, Dr Tunji Alausa, for the initiative, which was launched in Abuja on the occasion of the World Patient Safety Day 2024.

Ugbodaga noted that the launch of the policy will improve the safety of all medical procedures, and enhance the quality of health care delivery in Nigeria.

He pledged to domesticate and implement the patient safety policy in NOHB in line with the approved implementation strategy, even as he promised to make the newly established Federal Orthopaedic Hospital the best in the operationalisation of patient safety protocol.

His words: “We will achieve our patient safety initiatives by ensuring reliable, excellent clinical care, protecting patients, staff and attendants from harm, and improving the efficiency of the delivery of care, while increasing access, equity and dignity of care for all segments of our catchment area and for all Nigerians.

“We will facilitate the exchange of information on issues related to the quality of health care, including patient safety and patient involvement, and establish protocol of care for patient safety by integrating existing knowledge, experiences and expertise.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Ugbodaga has commended the Chairman of Clinical Risk & Patient Safety in the NHS, UK and the founder of Patient Safety International, Prof Sonny Isemede, for his passion in the development and delivery of qualitative and safer healthcare.

He gave the commendation after a closed door meeting with Prof Sonny Isemede in his office.

Isemede is a patient safety advocate and the African patient safety icon, renowned for the the establishment of health as the cornerstone for developments (HC4D).

Responding, Prof Isemede promised to work closely with the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, to ensure reliable, excellent clinical care, and to protect patients, staff and attendants from harm, thereby improving the efficiency of the delivery of care, while increasing access, equity and dignity of care for all.
