Concerned over the rising cases of drug abuse, the Edo State Government has embarked on a comprehensive sensitisation programme, to combat the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people.

The government launched the initiative through the State Ministry of Social Development and Gender, with the theme: “Catch Them Young.”

It is aimed at educating school children and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness.

The initiative, which kicked off on 10 October, in Auchi, Etsako West local government area, would be replicated in Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts later this month.

This phased approach aims to ensure widespread impact across the state.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Barbara Osobajo, noted that drug-related issues account for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation.

Osobajo who was represented by the Director of the Rehabilitations Department, Mr. Sylvester Okeguale, disclosed that the ministry has initiated this critical programme to combat substance abuse.

“Our children are the future, but the future is now under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse amongst young people.

“We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth,” he said.

He emphasized the crucial role parents play in preventing substance abuse, encouraging them to stay actively involved in their children’s lives to mitigate the influence of peer pressure.

He called for a united front to ensure that youth receive the necessary guidance and support.

The facilitator of the Initiative, Mr. Purpose Ehigie, emphasized the alarming dangers of substance abuse.

He highlighted the risks associated with prescription medications, alcohol, and other seemingly harmless substances, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

Ehigie noted that curbing substance abuse-driven mental health issues among youth demanded proactive measures.

According to him, early education and intervention are key towards empowering children and adolescents to develop healthy habits and coping mechanisms.

“This approach aims to catch them young and foster a safer, healthier future, ” he said.
