2024 Carnival Calabar kicks off with dry run led by Gov Otu

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu has officially flagged off the dry run for the 20th Carnival Calabar in the vibrant city of Calabar, marking the beginning of preparations for the main event in December.

The governor, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, emphasized that this year’s carnival theme, “Our Shared Prosperity,” promises to be the largest and most impressive yet.

He also invited visitors and tourists globally to partake in the 20th anniversary of Africa’s grandest street celebration, which will feature 32 days of festivities, excitement, and joy in December.

Notable attendees of the dry run included Mrs. Onari Duke, former First Lady, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Peter Okpara, and leaders from the seven competing carnival bands. Mr. Effiong Ekpeyong, Festival Committee Chairman, and Mr. Austin Cobham, Executive Secretary of the State Carnival Commission, were also in attendance.

Mr. Gab Onah, Chairman of the State Carnival Commission, shared his eagerness for the upcoming carnival and reassured that all necessary arrangements are in place to guarantee a memorable experience for everyone.

The event radiated a lively and spirited atmosphere, heralding the start of another exciting carnival season in Calabar.

Thousands of carnival fans from both competing and non-competing bands participated in spirited dances and parades along the 12 km route in the state capital.
