The West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists has begun construction of a N3.8 billion naira state-of-the-art secretariat and conference centre in the Yaba area of Lagos.
A veteran pharmacist and former Minister of Health, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, flanked the WAPCP President, Alhaji Murtada Sesay, among eminent pharmacists, performed the groundbreaking of the project on Friday.
In his remarks, Sesay highlighted the college’s objectives which include promoting pharmacy education, practice harmonisation, research and advancing specialised disciplines.
Sesay said the facility will feature an e-library, regional drug information centre, offices, conference halls and meeting rooms, noting that this would enhance healthcare delivery in West Africa.
He noted that the project is expected to be completed within 24 months when funds are available.
He explained that the project underscores WAPCP’s commitment to excellence in postgraduate pharmacy education.
While commending the College Property Committee, led by Sir Anthony Akhimien, Sesay appealed for financial support, promising recognition for major donors.
The President said, “The major objectives of our College are to promote harmonisation of Pharmacy education and practice in the region, promote research in Pharmacy and to advance Pharmacy practice in specialised disciplines.
“We are in the forefront of promoting harmonization of pharmaceutical legislation and development of National Drug policies in the region.
“We promote integration of traditional Health Systems of Countries in the region and as well co-operate with other Health professionals, Scientist, organization in activities that will ensure maintenance of high standards of Pharmacy practice and healthcare delivery.
“Let me reassure our guests and special invitees that the College under my leadership will be willing to consider dedicating any part of the building to our major donors.”
Adelusi-Adeluyi described the project as an idea whose time has come.
He harped on the sustainability of the college through improved uptakes, relevant and creative that would make the profession more relevant and respectable.
In his remarks, the property committee chairman, Anthony Akhimien said the project is to provide an avenue where pharmacists can not only be trained but also be comfortable to do research.
