VIDEO: Nigeria Shuts Down as Labour begins Nationwide Strike

Striking workers have downed tools in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja as two of the country’s biggest unions, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) begin their industrial action over the hike in electricity tariff and a lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

Recall that the National Assembly had stepped in at the last minute to avoid the industrial action declared on Friday, the discussions ended in a stalemate, leading to the commencement of the strike.

Labour leaders in the nation’s capital sealed the main gate of the National Assembly, They chased out the workers out from their offices.

Meanwhile, Judiciary workers, under the aegis of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) also ensure strict compliance to the directive in line with NLC, TUC nationwide strike.

In the Federal Secretariat, where most Federal government offices are located, workers are locked out, and business activities grounded.

Activities in banks and other financial institutions were also disrupted as the staff were not allowed to get into their offices by the labour union officials.

Also in other parts of Federal Capital Territory wor tytkers stayed away from office in compliance with directives of the on national leaderships of NLC and TUC.

The nation’s capital has been thrown into a fresh round of blackouts over the shutdown of the national grid by aggrieved members of the labour unions.
