Express are now unbeaten in four matches after dispatching Mbarara City 3-1 at Nakivubo Stadium on Thursday to go to fourth in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table.
Abdul Rashid Kawawa grabbed a brace and Sam Ssenyonjo scored the other goal, the striker’s sixth of the campaign, to move the Red Eagles to 16 points. That is four points behind leaders Vipers SC and one more match played by Express. Seiri Arigumaho scored Mbarara’s consolation.
Kawawa gave Express the lead in the 21st minute when he headed home a right wing cross from Richard Basangwa at the far post. Mbarara levelled matters on 37 minutes when Arigumaho turned in a cross from leftback Joseph Kafumbe for his sixth of the season.
But Express restored their lead three minutes to half time after goalkeeper Abdu Kimera fumbled a clearance with his weak effort falling at the feet of Kawawa. The Express forward took full advantage, lifting the ball over Kimera inside the opposition half for one of the highlights of the season. Two-one at half time.
Ssenyonjo then made sure of the result when he side-footed home the third goal for Express after Mbarara failed to play out from the back. The result leaves Mbarara 10th with 12 points. Elsewhere, the bottom of the table clash in Eastern Uganda ended with hosts Mbale Heroes edging Soltilo Bright Stars 1-0.
Cosia Waiswa scored the winner in Mbale’s only second win of the season, which lifted them to eight points. They, however, remain in the relegation zone, just above Kitara and Bright Stars.
