Vice President Kashim Shettima will in the early hours of tomorrow address the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America.
The Vice President is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has asked him to attend the summit while he focuses on the prevailing situation at home.
Daily Trust gathered that Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement 9pm local time in the United States today (Tuesday) which is equivalent to tomorrow (Wednesday 3am Nigerian time).
In his address at the Summit of the Future interactive dialogue 2, titled: “Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security,” on Sunday as part of the events at the 79th UNGA, the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru made the case that the country has earned the right to become a member of the UN Security Council.
He said after contributing to 41 peacekeeping missions, deploying over 200,000 troops the country deserved a seat.
Badaru, who also spoke with State House reporters at the Nigerian House in New York, said Nigeria had a longstanding commitment to international peace and security.
He called for reform of the UN Security Council to ensure Africa was represented with permanent seats, adding that this would enhance global stability.
The Vice President is also expected to participate in key meetings on the sidelines of the event, and engage in bilateral meetings.
The high-level General Debate themed, “Leaving no one behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” is scheduled to take place from September 24 to September 28, 2024.
