Media and CSOs Workshop: Customer Service And Electricity Distribution Companies- By Ibrahim Abubakar, Yola

The workshop was organized by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors on Building Consumer Awareness and strengthening the Customer service capacity of Electricity distribution Companies.

Areas of discussion included corruption practices-DISCOs perspective, Transparency in customer practice and Disco’s band implemention, Metering initiatives (Illegal purchase of meters) estimate bill capping, bill payment and cash handling policy. And many others.

The One day Work shop, the Policy Dialogue on Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the Education and Electricity sectors was organized by ANED in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation Project.

The Policy Dialogue, which discussed how to effectively implement ANEDs core reports on corruption in electricity sectors was attended by the civil society, the media, among others.

All the participants at the Policy Dialogue agreed to work to ensure the effective implementation of the 15-Point Programme.

SERAP’s 15-Point Programme read, in part: “For proper metering, electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) must take a proper and comprehensive collation of all power consumers in their jurisdictions before issuing new meters under direct purchases or Credited Advanced Payment for Metering Implementation (CAPMI) systems.

DISCOS must urgently undertake initiatives to re-number and re-classify all electricity consumers in Nigeria for the purpose of issuing new meters. The NERC must shoulder the responsibility on this aspect.

Also called for was prosecution of all cases of corruption in the electricity sector and ensure effective recovery of stolen public funds.
