The Northeastern nigerian region have over the decade suffered greatly by the activities of the boko haram insurgency. Thausands of lives and property worth millions has been lost due to the insurgency. It is against this backdrop the Khaltum Foundation for peace organised a one day symposium for peace building in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Speaking in the event Muslim scholar Sheikh Ahmed Gumi says “abuse of power by the ruling class has been the bane of Nigeria’s insecurity leading to the rise in armed banditry and other forms of terrorism in the northwest”
Also speaking Borno State chairman of the Christians association of Nigeria (CAN) Bishop Mohammed Naga says religion plays little or no role at all in the poor leadership deliveries Nigerians get from their past to present presidents and cannot be a factor in the forthcoming elections.

They also blame foreign interference, endemic corruption and lack of political will for the heightened insecurity confronting the country which if not checked will disrupt the smooth conduct of the 2023 general elections.

The clergymen raise these observations in Maiduguri during a peace building symposium organized as part of initiatives to ensure seamless reintegration of former Boko Haram insurgents into the society

The event is a one day peace building symposium with the theme “political violence: seeking innovative (non kinetic) approaches to restoring peace in northeast Nigeria” organized by kaltum foundation for peace.
Dignitaries at the venue were government functionaries, military representatives, religious leaders, other security agencies and community leaders across Borno State.

As one of a five persons panelists at the symposium, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi speaks on breakdown in nation’s security under the present leadership

Bishop Mohammed Naga who was alleged to have endorsed the selection of Kashim Shettima as a running mate to Tinubu states that Nigerians have never benefitted from the religious inclinations of past and present leaders as such religion should not be a yardstick in determining leaders.

Other speakers, notably a former media aid to former Governor Ali Modu Sherrif advise the government to observe and implement the laws guiding the handling of human rights violators including former fighters of the Boko Haram terrorists and ensure justice is done to both parties, that is the victims get compensation, fair hearing and the chance to decide the fate of the former fighters, whether to forgive them or seek redress in the courts of law.
