Gor Mahia kicked off their Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title defence with a 4-0 thrashing of Mathare United in a top fixture played on Saturday.

Fresh from failing to reach the group stage of the Caf Champions League having lost 6-0 on aggregate to defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt, K’Ogalo returned to the domestic scene seeking to stamp their authority and chase for a third straight league title.

It was K’Ogalo, who looked the better side in the fixture at Machakos Stadium but they had to wait until the stroke of half-time when Most Valuable Player (MVP) from last season Austin Odhiambo found the back of the net with a rasping effort for a 1-0 lead at the half-time break.

On resumption, it took Gor Mahia three minutes to double their lead when Shariff Musa drilled home from close range and it was 3-0 in the 74th minute when Geoffrey Ochieng completed a counter-attack move.

New Congolese signing Gedeon Bendeka drove the last nail into Mathare’s coffin when he scored the fourth in the 90th minute of the game. Gor Mahia coach Leonardo Martins Neiva was impressed with the outcome of the game but not happy with how his players failed to use the many chances that they created.

The defeat left the ‘Slum Boys’ winless from their opening four matches. They kicked off their season with a 4-0 defeat against AFC Leopards, drew 0-0 against Kakamega Homeboyz before earning another 1-1 draw against Sofapaka.

Meanwhile, Batoto ba Mungu’s poor start to the season continued after they suffered a 1-0 defeat against the visiting Bandari FC. Beja Nyamawi proved the hero for the Dockers after he notched home the all-important goal in the 45th minute. Just like Mathare the defeat left Sofapaka winless from their four matches.

Batoto ba Mungu under coach Robert Matano started with a 1-0 defeat against Tusker, lost 1-0 against FC Talanta, drew 1-1 against Mathare before the defeat against the Dockers. For Bandari, it was their second victory of the season, their first coming in the 1-0 win against promoted side Mara Sugar.

In another fixture, Bidco United battled to a 1-1 draw against Talanta. After a 0-0 outcome in the first half, Bidco drew the first blood in the 76th minute courtesy of Peter Nzuki before Talanta pulled a late goal to salvage a point from the game.
