Four police officers have been paraded by the Rivers State Police Command for extortion.
The officers, attached to a neighbouring Nigerian state command allegedly extorted N6.5 million from three persons along the East-West Road in the state.
The paraded cops arrested the three men in Port Harcourt on July 31, 2023, labeling them “Yahoo boys” and taking them to an undisclosed location in Delta State, where they were detained and subsequently extorted a huge amount, before releasing them the following day.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Command Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, the Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka, said after receiving the complaint about extortion allegedly committed by the officers, the command swung into action and arrested the accused officers as well as detained them pending the conclusion of the investigation.
The state police boss also paraded another team of officers who allegedly assaulted a female commuter on Sunday during a stop-and-search duty at Arcania junction, Ada George Road, Port Harcourt.
The CP said consequent upon his approach to eradicating criminality in the state, the four accused officers were arrested and detained pending the outcome of the investigation.
