The Nigerian Senate is seeking compensation for victims of ENDSARS protest which swept through major parts of the country in 2020.
In his lead debate at plenary, the Lawmaker representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Gershom Bassey in his Bill seeks to amend the National Emergency Management Act to provide for the Establishment of End Sars Victims Compensation fund.
He believes the bill will make provision for the establishment of END SARS funds and also bring hope for the ENDSARS protesters.
The bill was then referred to the Committee on Special Duties for further legislative actions to report back in one week.
Also speaking was Senator Lilian Ekwunife, PDP Anambra Central and the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan.
EndSARS was a decentralised social movement, and series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious unit of the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuse on Nigerian citizens.
