A man, Sura, has approached Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, praying that it put an end to the wedlock between him and his wife, Adiun, on the accounts of irresponsibility, constant fight and threat to his life.

Sura, in his divorce suit, claimed that Adiun showed him no love or care, and added that all she knew how to do was abuse him and rain curses on him.

The plaintiff added that the defendant daily frustrated him as a result of her misbehaviour.

He explained that there were times she fought him and locked him up in their room, refusing that he go about his business for the day.

According to Sura, Adiun would refuse to give heed to the pleas of neighbours who eventually got fed up intervening in their differences.

The plaintiff further said that the defendant, on some occasions, would seize his car key and that he would resort to going to work by public transport.

Sura added in his claims that Adiun later threatened to kill him after all her efforts to frustrate him failed.

He requested that their children be put in his wife’s custody and promised to be responsible for their upkeep.

Adiun pleaded not liable to the claims when they were read to her.

Sura gave his evidence thus: “My wife and I held an introduction ceremony after we met and agreed to go into marriage. I did not pay her bride price.

“Adiun became a thorn in the flesh immediately we started living together. She was neither loving nor caring. My wife, rather than bring comfort to me, made my life wretched.

“She was in the habit of assaulting me verbally and raining curses on me. Adiun always bragged that she would blackmail me and dent my image.

“There were times she locked me up in the room after fighting me and refused that I went to work.  She turned a deaf ear to the pleas of neighbours who came to mediate in our differences.

“These later stopped intervening in our affairs because my wife always treated them with disrespect. Adiun at other times seized the key to my car, and made me resort to taking public transport to work. The more I complained, the worse, Adiun became.

“I got fed up with her and reported her to her parents who, after being witnesses to her misbehaviour, advised that I take another wife.

“She has since threatened to kill me, which was the reason I came to court. My lord, I am fed up with my wife and tired of our union. I want a clean break from her.

“She can have custody of our children while I am ready to bear the brunt of the demands of their upkeep.”

The court president, Mrs. S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case.
